The EU … Are you or are you not?

I find it strange that the United Kingdom makes a big deal out of being part of the European Union (EU) yet doesn’t seem to embrace all the aspects of being a member of the EU with much enthusiasm.

For instance, many of your primary producers receive subsidies from the EU based on the number of stock they have or in some cases I am lead to believe don’t have – always nice to get paid not to have cattle. Must run that one past the Australian farmers and Government!

Then you have the British Pound … At this point in time, the UK continue to use the GBP as its currency. Why is this? If you are part of the EU then you should be using the currency of the EU. It is almost like Tasmania (a state of Australia for the uneducated) using a different currency to that of the rest of the Australian mainland! Yes, I understand that to change currency can be a confusing thing for the older generation and all that sort of thing. But did your EU partners not have to do the same? Or is this an admission that the population of the UK couldn’t handle such a change?

The Colonials in Australia went through all this in the late 1960’s – to be accurate 14 February 1966.

In come the dollars, in come the cents,
to replace the pounds and shillings and the pence.
Be prepared for changes when the coins begin to mix,
on the 14th of February, 1966.

Then you have the metric system. Recently in Brussels, the EU council decided not to force the UK to go to the metric system of measure. Again the UK is not complying with all the things that the EU requires. It isn’t that hard to do the change over. Yes I grew up in the metric world, my parents they did the changeover and they handle it pretty well. They still refer to some things in imperial but hey so do I. I am 6foot 4inches in height for example. We all do it from time to time.

Come on … make your minds up as to which side you want your bread buttered on …. you are either in the EU or not!
